Being a captain of a company is no easy task, but being the head of an association of companies is perhaps even tougher. For Atty. Rommel Gutierrez, however, it’s all in a day’s work.

A certified public accountant and lawyer by training, Attorney Rommel Gutierrez has been with Toyota Motor Philippines for the last 15 years, and is currently their Vice President for Corporate Communications. It’s a big hat to wear, but he has another one: the President of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Incorporated.

CAMPI, as it is more commonly known, is the association of major carmakers in the country founded in 1995 to promote the auto industry and enhance the progressiveness and competitiveness of domestic automobile manufacturing.

Attorney Gutierrez took the helm of CAMPI during the 2012 general elections. It was a challenging time to take charge of the organization as the growth of the domestic industry was still feeling the after effects of the global financial crisis just a few years prior. In 2011, the industry was also hampered by the wide reaching effects of natural disasters: the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, followed by heavy flooding in Thailand. Apart from the toll on the people, these calamities affected the manufacturing and parts supply chains in the Philippines. Compared to 2010’s auto sales figure of 168,490 that saw the industry surpass the overall record of 162,000 units set in 1996, sales in 2011 took a dip to 141,170

The CAMPI President had a tough job ahead, but charted a course for the organization that saw the industry not only fully recover from the crises, but surge forward like never before. In 2012, CAMPI sales grew to 156,649 units, followed by another record breaking run in 2013 at 181,283. In 2014 the organization went way past the 200,000 mark at 234,746 with 29.5% growth, and again in 2015 when CAMPI clocked in at 288,609 units at 22.9%.

For Atty. Rommel Gutierrez’s leadership of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Incorporated, a period marked with unparalleled growth and record-breaking numbers despite the challenges, C! Magazine proudly honors the CAMPI President’s efforts with the C! Award for Corporate Achievement.
