Pre-road trip vehicle checklist for a safe Holy Week

Holy Week is an annual road trip event in the Philippines, with many families driving out to the province to be with loved ones, explore nearby provinces, or to just get out of the hustle and bustle of the city for a time. That is why all drivers and vehicle owners ought to check on these 6 items before heading out of town:

Aircon – Experiencing a malfunctioning air-conditioning system can be a driver’s worst nightmare. It’s important to promptly have it inspected if you notice any decrease in its performance. Additionally, modern vehicles come equipped with cabin air filters that effectively purify the air that enters the AC system. Keep your air filters clean to ensure that your vehicle’s cabin doesn’t stink and that it is cooled efficiently.

Battery – To prevent the risk of your car battery dying while on the road, it’s crucial to ensure that the battery and cables are firmly attached and free from corrosion. It’s important to stay vigilant throughout the year since batteries are susceptible to failure at any time. We also recommended having your electrical and ignition systems inspected prior to your trip to prevent any potential starting issues that could ruin your road trip experience.

Brakes – You can determine the condition of your brakes by checking for any unusual signs such as squeaking sounds, pulsations, grabbing, or longer stopping distances. If you notice any of these signs or hear any noise, it could be an indication that your brake pads require replacement. Prioritize your brake check up because a vehicle with poor stopping power isn’t just a danger to its occupants – it’s a greater danger to other people around it.

Lights – It’s crucial to ensure that all of your vehicle’s lights are in proper working order, including indicators, brake lights, full beam, fog lamps, and any others. Faulty lights can pose a significant danger not only to you but also to other drivers on the road. A failure to properly gauge distance and direction can be catastrophic, especially if blinkers fail. Remember to test all of your vehicle’s lighting components, including headlights, blinkers, and interior lights, to ensure that they are all functioning correctly.

Oil – It’s important to have your vehicle’s service technician regularly check your oil levels and assess whether an oil change is necessary. Waiting for the warning light to come on is not recommended since by that time, significant damage may have already occurred. Left with insufficient and/or degraded oil, your car’s engine can overheat, break down, and cause significant damage to your vehicle.

Tires – Flat or soft tires remain one of the most prevalent issues on the road today, and they can become especially problematic during extended journeys due to the possibility of overheating and blowouts. To avoid such situations, it’s essential to maintain proper tire pressure and routinely inspect the condition of your spare tire. Additionally, the legal minimum tread depth requirement is 1.6mm across the central 4/3 of the tire, all the way around.
